Killington

The small, resort-centric Town of Killington has a permanent population of only about 1,407 (2020 Census), yet it serves as the vibrant core for the huge influx of tourists. The town’s economy is centered on the tourism and hospitality sectors, supporting the array of restaurants, shops, and lodges along the access road. However, the mountain is now poised for a monumental transformation with a developer planning a $3 billion investment over 25 years to create a completely new, high-end base village. This luxury development, described as aiming to rival resorts like Aspen and Vail, will replace the current aged Snowshed and Ramshead lodges with clusters of luxury homes, a forest spa, a panoramic pool, and a “ski beach” area, along with over 100,000 square feet of new retail and dining space. This multi-phased project is set to provide the luxury amenities the mountain has historically lacked, cementing the Killington region’s status as the Northeast’s premier adventure destination.

Killington Resort is renowned as the “Beast of the East,” claiming the title of the largest ski area in the Eastern United States, boasting the largest vertical drop in New England at 3,050 feet. The resort spans six interconnected mountains, offering 1,509 acres of skiable terrain across 155 trails, and is famous for its long season, often stretching from November into May, thanks to an advanced snowmaking system covering a remarkable 71% of its slopes. The resort also operates Pico Mountain, a classic, family-friendly complement just three miles north, which offers 58 trails and a significant 1,967-foot vertical drop of its own. Beyond skiing, the four-season destination is a premier summer adventure hub, featuring the Killington Bike Park, which boasts over 30 miles of lift-served trails across three lifts and is one of the fastest-growing downhill parks in the East, as well as the Killington Golf Course, an 18-hole championship course known for its mountain views.
